Assata Shakur

Assata Shakur, born JoAnne Deborah Byron on July 16, 1947, later known as JoAnne Chesimard, is an African-American activist and former member of the Black Panther Party and Black Liberation Army. She was convicted of the first-degree murder of a New Jersey state trooper in 1973, but she escaped from prison in 1979 and was granted political asylum in Cuba, where she has been living since 1984.
