Emma Goldman

Emma Goldman was an influential anarchist, political activist, and writer of Russian-Jewish descent. Born on June 27, 1869, in Kovno, Russian Empire (now Kaunas, Lithuania), she emigrated to the United States in 1885. Goldman played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century. She was an outspoken advocate for free speech, birth control, women's equality, and workers' rights. She wrote extensively and was also known for her speeches on social issues. Goldman was arrested and imprisoned multiple times for her activism and was eventually deported from the United States to Russia in 1919. She continued her activism in Russia and later in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. Emma Goldman passed away on May 14, 1940, in Toronto, Canada.
