Phillis Wheatley

Phillis Wheatley was the first African-American female poet to be published, with her book 'Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral' released in 1773. Born in West Africa and sold into slavery at a young age, she was brought to America and eventually became well-known for her poetry, which often discussed themes of freedom and morality. Her work earned her recognition in the colonies and in England, and she was emancipated shortly after her book's publication.
