Booker T. Washington

Booker T. Washington was an African American educator, author, orator, and advisor to multiple presidents of the United States. Born into slavery in 1856, Washington rose to become a leading figure in the African American community, advocating for economic self-reliance and vocational education. He was the dominant leader in the African American community in the United States from 1890 to 1915. He was the principal of the Tuskegee Institute, a historically black college in Alabama, and he was a proponent of the Atlanta Compromise, which sought to work within the social constraints of the time to improve the status of African Americans.
