Jeremias Gotthelf

Jeremias Gotthelf was the pen name of Albert Bitzius (1797–1854), a Swiss pastor and novelist. He is best known for his deeply rooted depictions of rural life in his works, which highlighted the struggles of peasant communities in the Emmental region of Switzerland. His writing often addressed social issues and the moral and spiritual challenges of the time. One of his most famous works is 'Die Schwarze Spinne' (The Black Spider), an allegorical tale that reflects his concern with the moral state of society.
