Jones Very

Jones Very was an American essayist, poet, clergyman, and mystic associated with the Transcendentalist movement. Born on August 28, 1813, in Salem, Massachusetts, he was known for his intense religious beliefs and mystical experiences. Very graduated from Harvard and became a Greek tutor at the university. His poetry and essays often reflect his spiritual convictions and his admiration for the works of Shakespeare. He was briefly institutionalized for his intense religious fervor, which some contemporaries considered to be madness. Very never married and lived a life of simplicity and devotion to his faith. He died on May 8, 1880, in Salem.
