Robert Smith Surtees

Robert Smith Surtees was an English editor, novelist, and sporting writer. He was born on May 17, 1805, in The Riding, Northumberland, and died on March 16, 1864. Surtees is best known for his creation of the character Jorrocks, an eccentric sporting grocer, which first appeared in his publication 'New Sporting Magazine'. He wrote several novels featuring Jorrocks, including 'Jorrocks' Jaunts and Jollities' and 'Handley Cross'. Surtees' work is noted for its vivid portrayal of English country life and sporting culture during the Victorian era.
