Alexander Wolkow

Alexander Melentyevich Volkov (Russian: Алекса́ндр Меле́нтьевич Во́лков) was a Soviet author best known for his adaptation of L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz into a series of novels set in the Land of Oz that he created, which was vastly popular in the Soviet Union. Born on November 14, 1891, in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Volkov was not only a writer but also a mathematician and educator. His version of Oz, starting with 'The Wizard of the Emerald City' (1939), diverged significantly from Baum's original, introducing unique characters and plots. Volkov's adaptations extended the Oz series, making it a beloved part of Russian children's literature. He passed away on July 3, 1977.
