James McNeill Whistler

James McNeill Whistler was an American artist, active during the 19th century, known for his painting 'Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1', also known as 'Whistler's Mother'. He was a key figure in the Aesthetic Movement, which advocated art's emphasis on beauty and form rather than on conveying moral or political messages. Whistler's work in painting and printmaking was highly influential, and he is also remembered for his public feud with critic John Ruskin, which led to a famous court case.
