Van Wyck Brooks

Van Wyck Brooks was an American literary critic, biographer, and historian. Born on February 16, 1886, in Plainfield, New Jersey, he played a significant role in the development of American studies as an academic discipline. Brooks is best known for his series of studies entitled 'Makers and Finders,' which chronicled the development of American literature from the early days of the republic to the 20th century. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography in 1937 for his book 'The Flowering of New England, 1815–1865.' He passed away on May 2, 1963.
