William H. H. Murray

William Henry Harrison Murray, commonly known as W.H.H. Murray, was an American clergyman and author who lived during the 19th century. Born on April 26, 1840, and passing away on March 3, 1904, Murray was particularly known for his influential role in promoting outdoor recreation and the appreciation of the Adirondack Mountains in New York State. His guidebook, 'Adventures in the Wilderness; or, Camp-Life in the Adirondacks,' published in 1869, encouraged many to explore and vacation in the Adirondacks, leading to a significant increase in tourism to the area. His writings helped to popularize the concept of wilderness vacations, as well as an early appreciation for environmental conservation.
