John Kirk Townsend

John Kirk Townsend (1809–1851) was an American naturalist, ornithologist, and collector. He is known for his contributions to early American ornithology and for his 1839 book, 'Narrative of a Journey Across the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River'. Townsend participated in the expedition to the Oregon Country with Thomas Nuttall, and they collected several previously unknown species of birds and mammals. His work significantly contributed to the scientific knowledge of North American wildlife during the 19th century.
