Sappho

Sappho was an archaic Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. She is known for her lyric poetry, written to be sung while accompanied by a lyre. In antiquity, Sappho was commonly regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets and was often referred to as the 'Tenth Muse'. Her work focused on themes of love and passion, particularly directed towards other women, which has led to discussions of her sexuality. Much of her poetry has been lost, and what remains exists only in fragmentary form.
