Elias Lönnrot

Elias Lönnrot was a Finnish physician, philologist, and collector of traditional Finnish oral poetry. He is best known for compiling the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic compiled from national folklore and mythology. Lönnrot's work had a profound influence on the Finnish language and literature and helped to inspire the national awakening that eventually led to Finland's independence from Russia.
