Hendrik Conscience

Hendrik Conscience was a 19th-century Belgian author who is best known for his romantic nationalist literature and is considered a key figure in the Flemish movement. He wrote in Dutch and is famous for his novel 'De Leeuw van Vlaanderen' ('The Lion of Flanders'), which awakened a sense of Flemish national identity. Conscience was prolific, penning over 100 novels and novellas, and is often credited with popularizing the Dutch language in Flanders at a time when French was the language of the educated class.
