David Dabydeen

David Dabydeen is a Guyanese-born writer, novelist, and academic. He is known for his works of fiction and poetry, as well as his scholarly contributions to the fields of Caribbean literature and postcolonial studies. Dabydeen's notable works include novels such as 'The Intended' and 'Disappearance', and his poetry collection 'Turner: New and Selected Poems'. In addition to his literary career, he has served as a professor at the University of Warwick and was Guyana's ambassador to UNESCO.

    "Disappearance" is a novel about a young Indian man who moves to England to work as a carpenter in order to send money back to his family in India. However, he finds himself isolated and struggling to adapt to the unfamiliar culture, language, and climate. As he grapples with his identity and sense of belonging, he also becomes involved with an older woman, leading to a complex and fraught relationship. The book explores themes of immigration, cultural dislocation, race, and identity.
