William Carleton

William Carleton (1794–1869) was an Irish writer and novelist. He is best known for his vivid portrayals of the peculiarities of Irish rural life. His most famous works include the novels 'Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry' and 'The Black Prophet: A Tale of Irish Famine'. Carleton's writing was informed by his own upbringing in a poor peasant family in County Tyrone, which provided him with an intimate understanding of the themes he explored in his work.
